Pick up those damn bones!
« on: October 19, 2009, 05:11:39 pm »

So, I started on a map with skeletons and zombies. It was a damn good map, so I figured I'd deal with it.

Now, obviously I have no shortage of bone/skulls.

Now, I want to get them inside so they don't disappear. I have a standard refuse pile inside (with a door to contain the miasma) but my people are not hauling the bones (plenty of people with "No Job" available). I made a pile specifically for bones and skulls using the custom stockpile but they still will not haul the bones.

My craftdwarfs can use the bones, but must walk clear across the map to get to them, and I am worried they may get injured doing this. Plus, it is a waste of time.

Why will they not carry the bones?

A few possibilities, ordered from most to least likely...
-They don't have Item Hauling enabled
-You've set a global order to Forbid Other Death Items (in your 'o' menu).
-Too many parties.
-They don't have a path to the bones.
-They're trying, but as they get close enough they're being interrupted by a nasty.
-A nasty chopped their arms off.
-The AI in your copy of the game has become sentient and despises you.

I've never tried it and there's a good chance it could make them freak out.

Did you set your orders to Dwarves collect refuse from outside?

Thank you, I didn't realize "Dwarves Gather Refuse From Outside" was off by default.

Now, what to do with all these bones. I am pretty much out of crafts/furniture to decorate.

I guess I could make bolts...

I'm training nine dwarves up to legendary crossbowdwarf.  I have run through a few thousand bolts so far -- one legendary bonecarver cranks out bone bolts, another cranks out skull totems.

Also, you can manufacture vomit at a smelter.  Subsequently removing the smelter spews vomit over a surprising area.

Train up bonecarvers to make exceptional bolts.  If you're done that start getting a bowyer up to legendary by making bone crossbows.

Yeah, you can never go wrong with training ammo.  It's cheap, it trains your crafty dude and it lets your archers pew their way to excellence.

Plus, in a pinch a stack of exceptional bone bolts are plenty lethal enough.

Especially if its a large animal that produces large stacks of bones.
