How did I flood my wells?
« on: October 18, 2009, 10:54:40 am »

Two years ago, these wells were perfectly fine.

Now, they're flooded.

I've had six wells here for many years with no problem.  Even after I built my waterfall, the well continued to work fine with only minor signs of flooding - never more than 1/7 in a couple of tiles.

Then I added some pumps to my moats to drain them, and started manually pumping.  As soon as the pumping started, not only did my waterfall start flooding everything around it, but water came up through these wells and flooded the room (good thing I put doors around it, or my residency halls would be pretty soggy right now...)

I'm pretty confused by this... What did I do to make the water come out of the wells and flood the whole area around the waterfall like that?  I have nothing but guesses...  Is it because I added more water to the canal from the moat, and the water needed to go somewhere, so it came out of the wells first and then flooded the waterfall second?

Also, how can I save my wells?  I'm thinking of pumping it out from above, but I don't know if that will work.

Yes, it probably IS because you added more water to the canal. See, the wells as they are there are at the same level as the water filling their channels. Once more water is added to 7/7 water, it magically drains away to wherever there's space for more. In a river, this is the head of the river, or where it drains off the map. With a well handy, the wells turn into fountains of pressure.

I had this issue (and question) myself, when finding that my elf drowner draining into the brook caused the indoor wells to flood.

Hmm... Does this always take place downstream from where the water was added?  In other words, if I rig a pump to that well room and dump it into the same canal downstream, will the water still reappear in my well room?

Ask not what the Dwarfs can do for you...
But ask.... why are they drunk all the time?

Do you have buckets?

Is there a valid path?

Do you have a water source designated as a zone?  Is it a valid source, fresh water?

Do you have haulers w/ the... um... furniture(?!) hauling enabled? (Now that you mention it, not sure which Hauling labour would be used!  :P)

Even then, make sure they have no other labors enabled - water hauling is a low-priority job, so almost anything else could distract them.

I've only seen it happen downstream. Test it, perhaps.

Remember that water moving through a pump or diagonal has its pressure reset. This makes one of those critical for underground water sources.

It's not an embark so much as seven dwarves having a simultaneous strange mood and going off to build an artifact fortress that menaces with spikes of awesome and hanging rings of death.

you could build a pump, and put the overflow right next to the pump.
some open tiles the same height as your well.

rather than traveling through a long windy well-path, the water will pop up through the overflow, perhaps even back into the river.

Actually, the Fill Pond labor is pretty high priority. Since there is no special profession required, any available dwarf will perform it. This leads to frustrating cases of miners abandoning their tasks to fill a pond half the map away.

Kenbo, did you designate the zones that you're trying to fill with water as water sources? I think that prevents dwarves from filling the area with water, since they're looking for water from the area they're supposed to be filling.
