can't build with colored stone

whenever I build something and it shows the list of materials i can use, the colored stones i have available(orthoclase, olivine etc.) don't even show up. all i get are my boring old diorite and wood and metal bars. what gives? all i want is to make my fortress prettier.

Forbidden stone won't show in the list. Neither will reserved economic stone.

It's neither of that. it's just sitting there in my stone stockpile.

check your z stones menu; if the stone isn't green there, it won't be available for use in building or by your stoneworking professions (but can still be used in appropriate reactions such as flux for making steel)
