Why do you think the elves don't use wagons. Just because of the trees?

I don't think so, since the weapons and armor they use are made from wood and since they also build cages.

Elves are ultrahippies.
They will ONLY accept wood if it died of natural causes, and ONLY get seeds from plants that give permission.

I don't know if this is a bug or not, but...   usually elves bring me lots of cool stuff, like giant predatory animals in cages and utterly impractical weapons and armor.  However, last time they visited they brought me NO cages - just bins of cloth and WOOD.  Lots and lots of wood logs.  Seemed very un-elven, though I didn't complain.

However, my memory is pretty bad - I am absolutely certain that they did not bring me any cages or caged animals, but I won't swear they brought me a ton of wood...  it is slightly possible I am getting them confused with the subsequent human caravan...  anyone else have elves bring them wood?

They could have been some sort of rogue element, like the rumoured black Spathi squadron.

They're also level 7 hypervegans, they don't eat anything that casts a shadow.

Elves bring wood all the time.

Apparently, not if you give them too good a deal.

In our fort, we'd cooked up tons of Sunshine roast to get rid of excess food ... and gave the elves a truly stunning deal in order to clear storage space, several dozen cheap -felsite mugs- and expensive +roast+ in exchange for some wood and caged creatures.

They brought one log, one 5-tack of some plant, and two dozen or so pages of cloth the next year... apparently that happens if you trade with the pointy-eared ones too much (cloth has a high value to weight ratio).
