I have a pick in  my weapon stockpile, but I can't make my miner pick it up. I have a similar problem with my woodcutter's axe. They just stand in the meeting area with nothing to do. I have tried many variations on the m-w weapons menu but they still decide to do nothing.

Check their labors first, sometimes those toggle off when they go into the military. Check to make sure the axe and pick are not forbidden, sometimes they get forbidden when a dwarf drops them. Those are the two most common issues I have with drafting miners.

<nods>

1) Make sure the labor is designated
2) Make sure the weapon is not forbidden or tasked for stockpiling (pause, forbid, unforbid - that will cancel any active Hauling task targeting that item.)
3) (and make sure there's a valid path - just mentioning it.)

If that fails, try giving them something to do with them.  Tho' not necessary (they should pick them up either way), designating some trees to cut or stone to mine tends to wake them up.

If you set a dwarf's weapon preference to something other than "Unarmed", it turns off mining (similarly, if you set it to something other than "Axe", it turns off woodcutting).

Also, you can manufacture vomit at a smelter.  Subsequently removing the smelter spews vomit over a surprising area.

Thanks. It had turned the labors off. I could've sworn I checked it. Guess I'm just dumb.
