Traders have stopped coming
« on: October 17, 2009, 09:49:19 pm »

I just recently got upgraded to a county. I never got the baron, so this was a sudden lurch. The countess arrived during spring, when curiously enough the elves didn't show up. I decided it must have been because I was sieged by a megabeast (GCSQ from dig deeper, ugh) and wrote it off. Next season, the humans arrived but wussed out when a single caravan guard died, retreating through four squads. Fall came, and no dwarves arrived.

I've traded with both the dwarves and elves before, I've checked to make sure there's a path to my depot, and I checked on the civs menu. Both civs are still fully functional and the elves are not at war with me. Is there something about the count that makes them stop, is this a bug, or am I missing something?

Caravans will never arrive during a siege, though I'm not sure if a megabeast attack counts. As for your humans, the loss of a single merchant is enough to make any caravan immediately turn around and leave.

P.S. If you don't get this note, let me know and I'll write you another.
It's amazing how dwarves can make a stack of bones completely waterproof and magmaproof.
It's amazing how they can make an entire floodgate out of the bones of 2 cats.

I understand that, but the megabeast siege was fairly short. 23 legendary hammerdwarves make short work of anything. Other times I've had trade caravans show up after sieges with no problems.

As a side note, during the fall a human diplomat came to visit my countess, nearly wandering into an orc siege in the process. He complimented the fortress and left. This is normal? I thought humans only came during the summer.

In my experience, getting a siege / megabeast attack at the start of the season, disables the caravan for that season, even if you defeat it very quickly.

Would figure, right when I ran out of shell. Though it doesn't explain why the dwarf caravan didn't show, the only thing that came during the fall was three ambushes, four snatchers (one of whom, sadly, got a child), and three thieves. Would ambushes do the same thing?

As far as elves not showing, are you sure they hadn't decided to ambush you instead, and then you never found the ambush?

I've never tried it and there's a good chance it could make them freak out.

According to the civs screen, the elves are still at peace with me. I haven't met their diplomat yet, they stopped showing in the same season my countess arrived (though with the amount of wood I have I fully expect them to be pissed off, I never use the stuff except for beds, brass furniture produces more wealth).

Edit: Strike that, their diplomat just threatened me. Time to mass produce wooden goods I guess, at this point I'd trade with the elves just to get rid of some of this damn cloth. And my fisherdwarf just caught some turtles in time for my clothier to go melancholy. Sigh.

Edit 2: And the elves show up with a caravan full of wood, cloth, and 15 plants. I bought everything but the cloth for a single leather shoe. I'm about ready to go to war with the shrubs if they have the gall to bring that much crap. At least some trade has come, thanks for the help.
