It's just odd someone would engrave hidden moons, I mean, what do you have to do to make a picture like that?

Probably something like the bottom half of your screenshot...  ;D

More funny than strange, I guess. I felt the title was fitting.
Quite ominous indeed.

I would be wonderful if there was some sort of integration of carvings/trinkets with religions. The Ominous Image could be like bogeyman for your little dorfs.
"Alright kids, if you're a good dwarf you get to stay with Zuglar in his jeweled hall, and if you're a bad dwarf, you have to deal with-"
*curtain pull*
"THIS!"
Staggered zoom on childrens faces/Ominous Image, dramatic strings, etc.

However it's not entirely this simple. You will find that some engravings state, quite simply "An image of a dwarf and dwarves, the dwarf is surrounded by the dwarves." and that's it. If you however you abandon, go into adventure mode and seek out your fortress you can observe greater detail. It'll say "An image of a dwarf and dwarves, the dwarf is surrounded by the dwarf. The engraving relates to the election of Urist McCheese as mayor of burgerville."

Alternative: Open DF folder, then go to the Data and then Init folder, i my case
 DFG 18-40d11\data\init

There's two good ones:

If you'd like your engravings to start off looking the same, set this to YES.
[ENGRAVINGS_START_OBSCURED:YES]

and

If you'd prefer to have it show the history behind every engraving you view in dwarf mode, etc., then set this to YES.
[SHOW_ALL_HISTORY_IN_DWARF_MODE:YES]
