Sensible major elections
« on: December 10, 2007, 09:06:00 am »

It seems that every time the major is chosen, the dwarves pick the least useful member of the fort they have.

My suggestion is to change major elections to suit the following criteria:
-Proven in battle?
-Good social skills?
-Influential position before election?
-Comeptent/experienced administratition?
To make sure that dwarves in an exelent position to be a leader get chosen as leader, instead of Dwarfy McNoName, Farmer who happens to like adamantine, yellow diamond and brimstone and the worst set of social skills possible.

Yes.  In fact I wouldn't mind just if a little stat consideration went into this.  My last mayor was a fish-cleaner turned hauler that had just immigrated.

Update: The herbalist that became my mayor had a chat with the liason. The result being that i pay 210%+ for everything i requested while my highest export is at 170% where my old mayor could generaly get the goods at 150% and sell them back at 230%.

Unhappy about his brimstone(Is this even active ingame yet? I can't find it anywhere.) demands going unfulfilled, my new major has gone SRM, walked outside and lured an antire pack of undead Gray Ones into the fort. Then the tard fouled up the cave river by jumping in it while bleeding. skelephants in the booze/food stockpile and trantum causing blood in the river. Third fort that got wrecked today because of reasons i couldn't prevent whatsoever.

What I do is give my would-be mayor a social skill (usually Consoler), engraving, and two trading skills (appraiser and something else).

I've never had anyone else be elected Mayor.

a mayor can be elected unskilled
and mayors can be elected by random suggestion

how in the real world do mayors become mayors?
by holding elections and people run for mayor!

if you are unqualified you wont win, no matter your sociability or ideas
if you are overqualified with no sociability you have a chance of winning

if you have minimal skills required and some friendly personality you will probally win even with bad politics

so whats the deal?
seems like unskilled folk are very sociable with some bad politics are winning mayor positions and mucking it up
whereas perfectly electable socialite with legendary social skills fails to make the grade ...why?

as it is, dwarves can hold many positions and perform them adequately including craft jobs
so why then does the lamer unskilled peasant become elected mayor? none of his personality traits dictate he would be best to do the job!

Right now the social skills are the only skills used by the leader, and they exert an influence on the election if the candidate actually has them.  Having a bunch of friends is also useful.  When the leader actually has to do something else, it can take more into consideration.  There's also no real notion of fame right now, and that'll have to come into consideration later on.

I fail to see how this is any different from real-life politics.  :D

I usually bump up negotiator to the max, then put a point into appraise and 1 point each into 4 of the social skills (chosen at random). That guy always ends up the leader and I've never, ever had him not be elected mayor or not be re-elected.

My citizens always elect military dwarves for some reason. Champion military dwarves. Which basically means anything that a mayor needs to do goes undone.

My champion macedwarf mysteriously fell 4 z-levels yesterday and survived with red and yellow wounds to almost every part of his body.

My miners are digging a pit below his bed for..ventillation. The pull lever/r spikes..stir up the air.

That explains it i guess. The farmer spend 3 of his 4 years in my fort in the barracks, making friends with everybody. The actual leader(every noble position xept major) was entombed in his room for the entire time updatin records and occasionaly came out to talk to some caravan.
