Obsidian casting in a stair tile?

Is it possible to generate an obsidian tile on a stairwell? I'm about to try my first megaproject (well, hopefully my first successful one, the others... didn't work so well), but I'd like to be sure I can leave the scaffolding on the inside of the tower before I start pouring the magma.

As long as you don't mind the stairs being destroyed, sure.

Remember that up stairs (as opposed to up/down stairs) have a floor, so you don't want them anywhere except the bottom of whatever you're casting.
