Farming and Mountainious Forts?
« on: October 13, 2009, 08:54:45 pm »

I was wondering aobut how to start farming without leaving the actual mountain rather than making a fort at the bottom of the mountain, does anyone have any good guides on how to do this?

You can't farm aboveground in mountain biomes, but you can farm underground just fine. All you need is a source of water to muddy up the rock and you can put a farm plot down. There's tons of ways to muddy rock; I'll leave it to your imagination to think of some.

I already saw the Irrigation link, it didn't prove to be quite reasource full, I'm asking about how to muddy the rock inside the mountain.(Buckets,Flood, more importantly how to place/build them)

You can divert some water from a water source into the area you want to farm. Just dig a tunnel between the two areas.
Bear these things in mind:
You want the farming area sealed for the duration of the irrigation, and also to be able to close off the water with floodgates or bridges when you're done, before too much enters the farming area.
After you irrigate, you need to eliminate the water. If you only let a small amount enter, so that the water level is 1 over most of the area, you can wait for it to evaporate, which is what I recommend. Otherwise, you need a more complex solution like smashing the water or draining into a cistern or off-map.

Buckets also work. I don't know how though.

My favourite approach is to use two z levels, carve out the top one (I usually go for small farms, 3x3 4x4 max) and then channel one strip at a time starting from the far wall.
Zone the top level as a "Pond/Pit" then go into the options, set it up as a pond.  Make sure there are buckets and a water source and your dorfs will go and chuck some water into it.  Once each of the tiles has at least 1 water on it, de-zone, channel out the next line.  When you have done your mine, carve some stairs or ramps (I prefer the latter) and boom, you've got yourself a sunken mud room that you can place your farm plot on.
