When off the travel window, a window will show up in the top left corner, with symbols and various directions (such as N, NW, NNW, etc.).  These symbols will correspond to important sites - towns, mountain halls, forest retreats, dark towers, ruins, and caves.  (Maybe something else, not sure.)  The item on the top of the list will be the location you are nearest.  If you are actually on a tile with a town, just head in whatever direction is associated with the first item on the list.

Ask not what the Dwarfs can do for you...

He he he.  Yeah, it almost looks done...  alas...  those who are in your teens, hold on until your twenties...  those in your twenties, your thirties...  others, cling to life as you are able...
It should be pretty fun though.

There're different "towns", this may be your problem.
Elves have nothing but elves and trees.
Goblins have dark towers, goblins, snatched people and sometimes a demon.
Dwarves have just a huge bunker with dwarves and nothing else.
Humans' towns are the most natural, they have various types of buildings like houses, dorms, a tavern, barracks, shops and sometimesa temple and a keep if it's a capital.

However back in 2d towns were more interesting in some way, also there were RUINS. Actually, there're, I'd suggest to play 2d adv. mode for a change, I have a 2d with graphics here in the modding forum in case you don't like to play ASCII only.
