Artifical Gems
« on: December 09, 2007, 01:17:00 pm »

Anyone here got freeview, and for some odd reason, watched QVC for about 15 seconds? Well if you have, you'll probably know they run a fake diamond range called Diamonique.  My suggestion is thus; Add some way to create fake gemstones to satisfy those nobles asking for pink and green diamond studded with gold or something stupid like that, or to add a bit of value to rooms.  If a dwarf is gullible enough, they might think it's real, giving them a massive happiness boost.

That opens up lots of interesting possibilities for counterfeiting as a possible industry for your fortress. "Silver" coins, fake masterwork items, made up diplomatic letters from a deposed prince asking for a few gold bars to rescue his great fortune from the kingdom and share it.
The only thing better than selling -Hoary marmot leather shirts- as ☼Cow leather shirts☼ would be fending off the MHPD swat teams when they crack down on your fortress.

Neat idea, but I don't think you'd fool a dwarf. Now, selling Plati-near® crafts to the elves might be fun. (Especially if, unknowst to the elves, since they would think it was Platinum, it involved the use of organic products in its synthesis!)

Diamondique®
Gowld® (Pyrite)
Sylver®
Plati-neer®
Adamantilike®
Formica® (which is a synthetic substitute FOR MICA, hence the name)

Interestingly, many (lower-quality) gemstones, as in they have cracks in them, are put into pressurized oil baths (cedar oil is common), and this process 'seals' the gems so they look more fancy.

Hmm, wonder what the elves think of that? =p

That's another idea, counterfeiting.  Making silver coins out of Sylver™, or something along those lines, then using them to buy real items would inspire a sly smile in me, at least.  Perhaps if you could train up a dwarf, then inhabit them as an Adventurer as your fortress continued could be useful, go to the nearest human town/other fortress, buy them out and then see a ragtag army armed with their own clothes (as you bought all the good stuff.) knock on your door. :3

The truth is, incidently, that cubic zirconia (ie Diamonique) is so close to diamond in every reasonable way that the only real reason diamonds are worth more in our world is because De Beers has gone out of their way to inflate their value (it isn't because Diamonds are rare in nature; they are not.  But they are only found in abundance in a few areas, which De Beers controls the overwhelming majority of.)

In fact, a cubic zirconia can be easily produced to be more perfect than a diamond; one of the easiest ways to spot the difference with the naked eye is to look for a diamond's imperfections.

Some sort of alchemy function taking colored glass and some other chemicals to make a corresponding colored gem might be nifty.
