Duke not coming
« on: October 12, 2009, 11:25:11 pm »

Anyone knows why my duke is not coming?

I've 193 dwarfs now, though a bunch are children. I did pass 140 through birth. Had a few migration since, but no duke. Got a Philosopher though.

Total Created Wealth is not a problem.

I'm not coming if you didn't trade much. How much exported wealth?

I would bet money Andrew has edited things retroactively, except I can't prove anything because it was edited retroactively.

I was also under the impression that your Duke doesn't arrive but is instead simply promoted from your existing Count (who is himself promoted from your Baron).

It's amazing how dwarves can make a stack of bones completely waterproof and magmaproof.
It's amazing how they can make an entire floodgate out of the bones of 2 cats.

He can arrive if you suddenly fulfill the requirements for a Duke in a single season when previously you hadn't had the ones required for a Baron fulfilled.

The Baron arrives on a random map edge, usually with a spouse and immigrants. I had a similar problem, the King wouldn't come. I'm fairly sure this was, as I think it is in your case, due to the population limit.

The King most certainly does not care about the population limit, and I would expect other immigrant nobles to be the same.

You also need to perform a certain amount of jobs for the baron/count/duke to arrive.

Try doing some jewelry jobs, some metalworking jobs, some crafting jobs, some masonry jobs. Just do about twenty jobs for each profession group and wait until next spring.

You also need to do a variety of different jobs in the previous year (and have the caravan survive) to trigger the baron. 4 of the following: 25 crafting jobs, 25 metal-related jobs, 25 wood-related jobs, 10 gem jobs, 25 stone jobs, 25 food jobs. That shouldn't be a problem if you are just doing a few things, but if your fort is completely directed toward one activity or another, it won't qualify.

That was January '08 but no reason to think it's changed.
The gem job is probably easiest to miss, they come in small groups and you might hold off on cutting and setting until your jewelers can practice to legendary on the cheapest ones.
I've had some issues with the baron coming as well and I think it's the wood jobs causing it. Possibly not counting either wood constructions like windmills and axles, or wood being turned into ash/charcoal.
