Apparently SOMEONE'S buying it, otherwise they couldn't afford to stay in business.

Yeah, companies buy it because they have absolutely no choice in the matter. Being companies they're vulnerable to legal action, so they have to get legal liscences, and as there quite simply is no alternitive to the Creative Suite (Adobe have made sure of that) they're forced to pay the outrageous costs.

Reminds me of Autodesk. We used AutoCAD for a semester at my previous college. They charged people $50 for a slightly longer demo, 60 days instead of 30. Needless to say, I didn't use either demo.

On the topic of free Flash editors: here ya go.

Autodesk follow a similar pricing regime for similar reasons; they have an effective monopoly and can charge whatever they feel like.

edit: I missed Neruz's post which said pretty much exactly the same thing.

Actually Adobe's target audience isn't us. They don't really care if we pirate it, which is why the copy-protection is easily circumvented.

The people they want to sell it to are professional designers and firms who can't afford the liability of running pirated software, and so they have to buy licenses for each computer they need to run it on. Businesses are used to paying those kinds of bulk prices for licenses.

And when it comes down to it, programs like Photoshop can be expensive because they are unparalleled. Really, Illus. and PS are the only tools to use in a professional setting, because they are the most comprehensive.

AFAIK Adobe has never made any real anti-piracy effort because its pretty much irrelevant to their business model.
