Does he have any metal preferences?  If so, then he probably wants a bar of THAT metal.

I had this exact problem not long ago and had no idea why it was happening.  I sat there going "Huh, must be a glitch, because I definitely have plenty of every material he's looking for so I don't know why he isn't getting it."  I didn't know they sometimes demand a material of their specific preference!

I've changed the reactions to give me adamantine on demand.

I find that ALL my weaponsmith/armorsmith/metalsmith/crafter moods ask for Adamantine specifically. They never take anything else.

If you'd killed him and melted down his mugs like I suggested you wouldn't have this problem.

I was under the impression that they only did that once you actually discovered Adamantine, and that they'd otherwise use their favorite metal or whatever was closest.

It's amazing how dwarves can make a stack of bones completely waterproof and magmaproof.
It's amazing how they can make an entire floodgate out of the bones of 2 cats.

I've NEVER been lucky enough to have a moody armor/weaponsmith, since there generally aren't that many of them in my fort.

This is why you have your immigrant peasants and soapmakers forge a single gauntlet or stack of bolts as soon as they arrive - if they don't have any other moodable skills, it'll get chosen if they get a strange mood.

About wanting adamantine.

No idea why it did so. I always use Dwarf Companion to see what they want, and it always said Bar (Adamantine).

I always make them make some armor. I prefer a armor artifact compared to weapon. Cause each soldier can use like 8 armor, but only 1 weapon.
