Newbie question
« on: October 08, 2009, 08:21:37 pm »

Hi all, just started playing DF and struggling with some of the basics.

I've built a Jeweler's Workshop, and I have a stockpile of rough gems, but when I add a task to the workshop to cut these gems, my gem cutter doesn't do anything, he shows as having No Job. :( 'Gem Cutting' is enabled in his labor prefs, and he is permitted to use the workshop in the workshop profile. What am I missing? Is some implement needed to cut the gems that I do not have?

Thanks in advance.

I'd like to ask a few question that may help us answer you.

Did you download any mods?
Does the jeweler have access to both the stockpile and the workshop?
Are the gems forbidden, or already cut?
Does the jeweler cancel the job, or does it still remain?
How long has he been uncooperative?

No problem, I appreciate I have probably left out relevant info.

Did you download any mods? - No

Does the jeweler have access to both the stockpile and the workshop? - Yes

Are the gems forbidden, or already cut? - No and no

Does the jeweler cancel the job, or does it still remain? - It's still there in the task list now

How long has he been uncooperative? - Uhm, indefinitely. He was one of my first wave of immigrants, so I built him a workshop and have since then been (unsuccessfully) trying to get him to use it

Strange situation indeed...
Well, if I were in your situation I would 'reset' everything involved in the problem:
- see if anyone else set to the 'Gem cutter' labor will do the job
- draft the jeweler and undraft him
- dump the gems, then reclaim them
- remove the workshop then rebuild it, or try it on a different workshop

When you're building a workshop, you get a 3x3 grid of light and dark green Xs. The dark ones are impassable. In the case of the Jeweler's workshop, three spaces along one edge are impassable, which forms a not inconsiderable wall (in fact, come to think, you could use jewelers' workshops and bowyers' workshops to wall up large spaces quickly). It's very easy to make an unusable jewelers' workshop by having its only entrance be through the blocked-up squares.

As always, 't' over the building and make sure the stone it's made of isn't forbidden.

This was it, much obliged.
