Export a movie from cmv to avi
« on: April 30, 2008, 07:13:00 am »

Are there any utilities that can take a cmv and export raster images? This could be useful for creating movies with voice, or even Dwarf Fortress music videos.

I'd also like to see if Dwarf Fortress movies are conducive to being encoded in MPNG within a reasonable size.

Hmm... a dwarf fortress movie would compress EXTREMELY WELL to most movie formats, since most of the screen typically stays the same from one frame to another.  It wouldn't work for fixed bitrate compression types, though, since the typical pattern is 500 frames: static landscape with 3 dwarves moving across it, 1 frame: Oops, zoomed to another static landscape - everything in the frame is now different.  500 frames: Now at second static landscape, 7 animals and two dwarves moving - hence the need for a variable bitrate compression scheme.

I saw a lot of youtube DF videos so it's possible. Try to ask there.

It's easy to just use a screen recording app to capture DF.
Camtasia for example.
It's impossible to convert them from CMV though.
Play it in DF and capture it as I mentioned already.

Iīm bringing the thread back to life, but I got a similar problem, since the movies played in DF always glitches and played in CMV player, they stop at frame 78. Because of that, recording the playing movie is not worth and I donīt know how to convert to any other format.
