How to create Decent Headquarters
« on: October 04, 2009, 06:40:55 pm »

At the moment i am attempting to create appropriate environments for my nobles yet i am faced with a possibly easy to solve challenge, unfortunately i am unsure of the appropriate way to solve it. At the moment nearly all of them have everything they require except an appropriate headquarters quality level. I was wondering how to raise the quality of my headquarters for the nobles .

What exactly is this "headquarters" you refer to? Bedroom? Dining room? Office?

The best way to improve room quality is to smooth the floors and then have some legendary engravers decorate them. Beyond that, build expensive furniture in them, such as statues made from valuable stones or metals.

P.S. If you don't get this note, let me know and I'll write you another.
It's amazing how dwarves can make a stack of bones completely waterproof and magmaproof.
It's amazing how they can make an entire floodgate out of the bones of 2 cats.

Its called living quarters.
Just stick a masterwork Window/Statue/Bag/ENgraving/Cabinet/COntainer in there.

It's way harder if you're in an aboveground fort. In an underground one, you just engrave the shit out of their whole rooms. If they STILL don't like it enough, you make a bigger room and engrave THAT.

Above ground, you have to pay attention to what materials they like and if possible make all their furniture out of that.

Engraving indeed helps, i have a specific fortress sector for noble living areas, and every possible block of space that could be engraved is engraved (it became this way relatively  recently)

I don't think putting stuff they like in the room actually helps toward value.

Most of my nobles were able to be satisfied by filling their towers with lots of platinum coffers and stuff.

regardless, the slime shooter will be completed, come hell or high water, which are both entirely plausible setbacks at this point.

It does, but only to that particular noble. If you re-assign the room later, it might be lower value to them.

Put them all in one room.  Stick in artifact floodgates and floor hatches willie nillie.

For the really picky ones, create a stockpile of masterpiece furniture out in the middle of nowhere with a jeweler's workshop nearby.  Then have them encrust the gems on the furniture.  Most of the time, they'll grab something from the stockpile, and after a couple gems it will wind up quite valuable.

On aboveground forts where you can't rely on engraving, I find this to be nearly mandatory.

If you have an aboveground fort with sand and either magma or heavy vegetation you could train up master glassmakers and carpet the room with spike traps.  Once you're churning masterwork you could even make clear glass spikes for the nobles.
