My little problem with DFG19 & 40d16
« on: September 12, 2009, 08:52:59 am »

Good afternoon!

I have been enjoying DF for a time now, though still a newbie compared to others.
I started around october last year and must say that I am very impressed with the game.

Not sure where to put this thread
Anyway, now to the point.

I heard that a new DF version has been released so I went to check mike maydays website (since I play with his tilesets) Downloaded "DFG19", unpacked, started it up. I didnt like it at all.

The highlighted text makes my eyes hurt and the 1280x400 resolution doesnt make it better.

Disappointed, I went here to download the newest release (40d16). Tried to apply mikes tileset
on this version by altering init.txt so that it looks like the init.txt in DFG18(the previous version I used).
It kinda worked, though some animals that had tilesets/icons before shows up like d for dog and cat for c.
A few dwarfs have strange colors such as green dwarves (can barely see him while running on the grass)

I can post pictures of how it looks like if needed.

If someone have a solution for this I would be very happy.
Sorry for my extremely bad english. Thank you

hey,

your english is perfectly fine, no need to apologise.

do you have a question in the post? i guess you are wondering about the aesthetic beauty of the new mayday version - do post pictures if you are having specific graphical issues...there are plenty more tilesets out there though, so do check the wiki on 'tilesets' on lots of fun and handy information. also 'graphics sets repository' is a great place to go on the wiki.

Thanks for the fast reply.

I was wondering if there is a way to use mike maydays tileset on the
latest version of dwarf fortress released here on this forum.
If so, how should I do it?

Mikes DFG19 at the moment. I just cant stand the highlighted text.
Also like I said, I didnt like the resolution.

This is the result of when I tried to use mikes tileset from DFG18
on the version I downloaded on this forum. I tried to use the same
settings in the "init.txt" as the one provided in DFG18 (same resolution)

Shows how it looked like before and how it looks like now. Some parts of
the old version (DFG18) is hidden behind DFG19.

Also, in DF18, there was a possibility to play with the resolution 800x600.
This isnt possible in DF19, is it? Since it worked decently on my EEE 1000H.
By changing the grid (if I remember correctly).

You need to move the art and raw folder over. I just gave someone instructions in the d# thread (link at the top of the screen).

What I did is pop mayday.png in Photoshop, color-range selected the background, deleted the background, and saved it again as a transparent PNG. I'm not really sure why he put a semi-transparent background, to be honest.

Thanks guys, I finally got it to work!

I did all the stuff with the raw/graphics whatever and finally everything shows up
as it should. I still havent solved the problem with 800x600, but this makes the game playable for me.

Yet again, thanks!

Same here, except I used paint.net.  I think the idea was to make things like floor tiles and grass tiles look better.  I guess he was getting tired of everything being on a black background.  Still, his solution wasn't an improvement.

Of all the tile sets I've come across I've only seen two sizes; 16x16 and the smaller one.  I've used Mike Mayday's on my netbook which has a max resolution of 1024x600.  It scales down a little bit but it still looks good. But I haven't used it with the latest SDL version of DF so it might look different now.

I run Mayday on 1024x768.

In the init file, change the windowed resolution (or full screen) to 1024x768, and set 'black space' to no under graphics. It looks just as good.
