Idle Dwarves Problem
« on: October 01, 2009, 10:53:15 pm »

Iīm having a problem with some idle dwarves because they are... idle. They have only the job they are suposed to do highlighted (besides healthcare), the brewer, for exemple, has plenty of plump helmet, pig tale (both bluelighted in food menu), barrels, vacant still, no wall item, closed door, mood or anything I can remember in his way. The same goes for the carpenter, clothier, weaver, thresher. But others (miners, farmers, mansoners (constructing floor), engraver (smoothing walls) are doing fine. Any possible solution? Maybe a specific problem in version d16?
Thanks.

I suspect that you have somehow accidentally isolated those dwarves or the workshops without realizing it.  Ramps are a frequent culprit, if you have any of those.

I actually restricted the use of the workshops for just one dwarf, the one who refuses to work. ALso, they are not isolated. There are plenty of stairs, up and down, no ramps at all, no closed doors.

Hrm.  Try clearing the restrictions and see if they get back to work.  Maybe it's not set the way you think it is.

I cleared, restricted, cleared it again, restricted once more, canceled the jobs, reassigned (through the workshop and jobs menu), no luck. The brewer (brewing and healthcare) is standing in the next room (no job), an open space (no door) in between, the still (min dabbling, max legendary) with brew drink enabled, an empty barrel by one side, thousands of plump helmet by other.

Hrm.  Oh.  Also, make sure (by use of 't') that the materials for the workshops didn't get forbidden somehow.  If the materials are forbidden, so is the workshop.

Try putting no restrictions on the workshop at all. It sounds like you're taking the restriction off, then putting it right back without unpausing. This could mean that a brainfart like assigning the workshop to the wrong dorf goes unnoticed.

What sort of room do you have the still in? All workshops have some solid parts, so if you've stuffed it in a 3x3 room with no clearance, there's a fair chance your dorf just can't get to the centre tile.

If neither of those help, post a screenshot or two so we can get a better idea of what's going on.

You got it. Didnīt know forbiding stone would forbid the workshops made of it.
Thanks, Malicus... very much!
