My last fort lost 5 dwarfs immediately after embark to troglodytes, ant-men, and fire imps. All of the dogs died in the conflict too. The livestock fell into the chasm in the chaos and all the supplies got left outside when the remaining two dwarfs buried themselves in the mountain. Of the first few immigrants one died in the construction of the cistern, another to fire imps, and a hunter got eaten by dire wolves. After a while I was doing fairly well before the orcs showed up and cleaned out the whole mountain post haste.

It was glorious and I never once even considered save scumming. You should try it for maximum fun.

Never. People who watch me play video games usually go insane from watching me save every thirty seconds. I save before I do anything, fight anything, minimize the game, or mess with any kind of option. I save after I successfully do anything, win any fight, mess with an option, or maximize the game. I am the very definition of a save whore, and any crash or mistake will lose me two minutes at the most.
