Dig Deeper Chickens.
« on: September 19, 2009, 12:17:09 pm »

Whilst looking through the raws in order to change the litter size of chickens, I noticed that they had :

[EXTRACT:chicken's egg:7:0:1]
[EXTRACT_VALUE:5][EXTRACT_COOKABLE]
[EXTRACT_SIZE:12]

How exactly does one extract an egg from a chicken however? I've tried the farmer's workshop, the butcher's shop and everything else I can think of, and nothing seems to work.

I realise this answer is probably going to be incredibly obvious, so please, feel free to mock me upon providing the answer ;)

KInda offtopic, but

Does egg hatches? If not, how do you breed chickens?

Oviparous reproduction is not yet modeled in Dwarf Fortress. You just have a male chicken and a female chicken, and then bam springtime comes and it gives birth somehow.

Yes, but the question is the same - how to get it and does it have some purpose?

You can't, currently. It's just like Cow Milk. You can use them for cooking, but you can't create them yourself, only import them.

Currently you can only obtain extracts from plants, vermin fish and vermin creatures. Extracts from larger creatures, such as cow milk, can only be obtained by import from a civilisation that has access to them. The wiki has the requirements needed for an extraction here.

You could mod in vermin chickens, but then you risk having a random dwarf rushing in thinking he was Ozzie Ozborne and biting the damn thing's head off.

You would be able to extract the eggs if they were vermin?

Yep. Just like Purring Maggots letting you extract dwarven milk. However, they have to be untamed vermin. Confusing, innit?

Very. I think I'll go back to butchering my chickens and eating their meat.
