In a slump...
« on: October 20, 2009, 07:57:49 pm »

The last few projects I had going ended up failing horribly, and now I can't really work up the will to try another...

First was the magma curtain trap, fey dwarf went berserk pulled the lever controlling the magmaflow. Tantrum spiral followed.

Next was the dwarven Atlas, I was digging out a statue of a dwarf (Complete with body length beard of course) holding up the rest of the map above it. Dug somewhere I wasn't supposed to, entire map collapsed. I knew I should have used dig instead of channel.

And finally, since the previous one didn't work, I figured I'd build a statue to hold up the sky. Started building at the very top of a 8 z-level tower fortress.  Screwed up deconstructing the floor after the statue was finished. Everyone who didn't die got knocked off the tower and lay bleeding outside. Then the siege came; I was beaten by an elf siege.

I'm so depressed.

Well...that last one was about the only bad-ass way to be killed by elves.

I can't interpret any of those as failing. All sound pretty awesome to me.

Losing is fun
seriously though, take a break and do some non-df things for a bit if you're truly depressed, what you did weren't failures, they were great undertakings that ended in fun.

You could always attempt the same ones correcting previous mistakes till you do succeed, also, it is a whole lot faster to check check and check again than repeat

Though going by that I can spend ages just in year 1 =/

Try going for something simpler, or maybe even turning off invasions.

Okay. Here's the trick to stop dwarves in moods from pulling the levers

Make SEVERAL doors between your "FTW" device controlling levers, and everything else. Make a couple of dummy levers in some between rooms that when thrown lock the door infront of them. Easy. Make a couple of others between the dummy lever doors and just forbid them for good measure. Problem solved.

I've never had problems with these things ever.

That could work against the new gremlins, provided they don't have trapavoid.....

Just assign three dogs per gremlin watcher, guaranteed to be infallible!

That and make the person patrol around the lever...

I'd imagine they do. But if you want a caged gremlin, make that same thing somewhere the gremlins can easily access it, and put a floor on a support as what the lever is attached to. Note that since walls make floors above, you'll have to use statues instead.

I suppose my efforts were not entirely in vain. It still is annoying though...

I guess I'll go dangle some elves 10 z-levels above the ocean. That always perks me up.
