Extinguish burning dwarves.
« on: September 22, 2009, 05:51:06 pm »

While trying to rectify a problem, one of my masons was standing under a square containing 1/7 magma that was being channeled out and caught on fire. Thankfully, he wasn't wearing any clothes. a dwarf came and brought him to the hospital, where he sat smoking in bed. Thinking quickly, I made a hole in the roof above him, and zoned it as a pond. One bucket later, his name went back to brown.

That is very useful to know, no more side-trips to the swimming room, through the waterfall, or other waterworks which gives them time to get thirsty to go to the booze stockpile.

Then again, the burning dwarf might as well ignite the dwarf carrying him to safety.

The dwarves(And all other creatures) do not know what fire is, so that's a small problem.

Good find :)

What kind of statues are your masons making, that you think they have "maximum exposure"?
(Full frontal ones, apparently.  With very short beards.)

I built a fort with a fire sprinkler system once. I put cisterns full of water over my central stairwell and my booze stockpile, and if I do it in the future I'll put one over the hospital and one in any area where dwarves work near magma. I made the fire alarm levers out of realgar. To prevent any flooding disasters, I connected my sprinklers to closed cisterns that were filled with just enough water and then sealed (rather than a constant supply of water), and made sure to build adequate drains for all sprinklered areas.

I know many players go to the consideration of providing individual plumbing to their nobles' rooms, so I suggest that such projects are also a good opportunity to plan for fire safety.

Did you ever get to use your sprinkler system?

I hope you had some opportunity to test the system you devised.

No, the only fire emergency in that fort happened before the sprinkler system was built and was the inspiration for its construction. Then the fort died in a tantrum spiral because I had, on the other hand, been extensively using the child sprinkler system I built for the magma vent.
