I'm trying to remember a book...

It's a science fiction (translated into Chinese) I read at least 20 years ago.

The story begins with the male protagonist having an eye surgery in a hospital (for a reason I forgot). A day before removing his bandages, a comet approached Earth and everyone except the protagonist were watching it.

Next day the protagonist waited a long time for his doctor to come, but the hospital was unusually quiet. Finally he removed the bandage on his own, and found the hospital empty.

Later on he found out that everyone was blind from looking at the comet, and that Earth was invaded by man-eating alien plants.

I forgot how the story ends.

I am trying to remember the author and title of the book. If it's originally written in English, I may read it again...

I was afraid that no one knows the book (that it is not famous); it seems I was mistaken.

Edit: It's not on WikiSource... in fact, WikiSource has no entry for John Wyndham. Knowing my local bookstores (even the large ones like PageOne) - their choice of English books (esp. old classics) to stock sucks - I'll have to order it.

Man, I remember getting this book by accident while looking for something completely different at the library when I was maybe 8 or 9 years old. Couldn't get past the first few pages, it scared the hell out of me.

I have another book to remember... again I read the Chinese translation long ago.

It's about a bunch of scientists exploring the depths of the ocean... they made three special suits, donned them and sank to the bottom of the ocean, then *walked* all the way to the other side, recording everything on the way. Their journey includes dangerous lifeforms, climbing underwater mountains and bottomless chasms.

If I remember correctly one of them didn't make it - his suit was damaged and had to float back to surface for rescue.
