I'm lucky I live in a tropical climate.

Flu is NOT a killing machine. They are only just a minor annoyance.

What does living in a tropical climate have to do with flu being a killing machine or not? It shouldn't be in any scenario (unless you are one of the people who DO have a higher risk of complications), but in the tropics, unlike in the rest of the world, flu is a year-long risk, not

The flu wipes out somewhere between 200,000 and 500,000 people per year. Influenza isn't particulary deadly in and of itself, but it's incredibly widespread, so even through it's not very deadly it infects enough people to rack up a substantial death count.

Well, I'm still sick.  Fever's been coming and going along with a nasty cough, painful swollen glands in my neck, terrible pain all over my body, nasal cavities swollen almost completely shut, and today, whenever I try to look any direction other than slightly down, an invisible man hits me in the head with his invisible baseball bat.

And yet, because I literally cannot pay the rent right now, I've been going to work every day.  That means stumbling into massive, pristine office buildings and teaching English to bank workers while trying to act like I don't feel on the edge of death.  So far no one has complained - I must be good at hiding it.  But the hardest part is preparing my lessons.  Right now I should be preparing for tomorrow's 7:30 AM banking English lesson, but if I try to look at the textbook for more than thirty seconds, my head starts swimming and I need to take a break.  Man do I wish I had paid sick days.

Yeah, flu is a year-long nuisance here.
Because they attack us all-year, we have developed resistance to it, faster than anyone in the subtropics.

Of course there are other advantages for not living in the tropics both in terms of disease and other stuff...
