Aside from looking classy, of course.  Decked out in blue plate and shield is just nice.

Nah. For me, addy is class because it's THE BEST. If copper shields are the best shields then copper it is. My Urists can smear some dimple cups on it if they want all-blue armor. No one does addy hammers, so why addy shields?

Thanks for the suggestion, but Number4 is correct: [...] it would be easier and more predictable to just be a racist.

Did somebody just rule 34 two veins of metal?

All I can imagine is a fully plate-mail clad soldier, rubbing himself in little mushrooms, moaning, "It's sooooo good!"

Heavier materials will cause more damage when the shield is used to attack, but the added weight will slow dwarves down more. And since shield bashes are rare, wood is usually sufficient. Be warned, however, that even though all materials block just as effectively, their fire/magma safe temperatures do not change.

Personally I've seen a fair amount of difference in strike quality even just upgrading shield weight slightly.

A pair of legendary +5 misc users are wading through a seige right now, one has an -iron shield- he bonded to, the other master copper.  Iron shield is bruising organs and muscles and reasonably frequently fracturing locations.  Copper is shoving one bone through a muscle and into another bone with like every shot ('jamming' messages)

Also, Im of the belief that while copper shields slow your dwarves down vs something like wood.  The increased weight they carry about should also cause them to gain in strength faster

I wish I had something cool to say about this.  Because it's really cool.

Also once they reach legendary Armor User, the weight of equipment is completely negated.

I couldn't breathe for a minute there.
