Raw Mussels Revisited
« on: September 18, 2009, 07:15:23 pm »

I had a question about what my Dwarves are doing with raw mussels, and when I searched the forum I found the following thread.  I don't know whether what I am seeing is related to this thread.  My Dwarves will clean raw mussels in the Fishery, just like any other raw fish.  The result is called mussels.  But my cooks will also cook raw mussels, making raw mussel biscuits.  Is this what should be happening?  I don't recall ever seeing raw perch biscuits.  Raw perch doesn't even show up on the kitchen menu.  I thought that the Fishery was essentially the place where the guts, scales, and any adhering dirt are removed, and had nothing to do with actual cooking, which destroys bones and shells.  Raw would therefore mean "uncleaned".  Should the cooks be cooking uncleaned mussels?  I am not sure if this is what is under discussion in the thread that I found.

Mussels have the [COOKABLE_LIVE] tag, which allows them to be cooked at a kitchen without preparing them at a fishery first.

That thread is discussing a bug apparently related to that tag, where kitchens were cooking more mussels into their roasts than they should be.

regardless, the slime shooter will be completed, come hell or high water, which are both entirely plausible setbacks at this point.

Okay, I see.

"Uncleaned Mussel Biscuits" would be a better name.   :D

I think the "prepare raw fish" job means drying or otherwise preserving the fish, as well as cleaning it if applicable.

I thought cleaned fish was still essentially raw, like meat.  Processed fish is stored with meat in stockpiles.

I don't think the meat is exactly supposed to be raw either -- it wouldn't make any sense for caravans to bring it, for example.  The game IS pretty vague about it, no question there.

Hopefully at some point in the future you'll have to explicitly dry/smoke/salt/etc. the fish/meat if you're not going to use it quickly.  Just one of many ways that food prep is too easy (and boring) right now.

So there's that, as well. It looks like the only chronic problems that water can't cure are nausea and cave spider bites.
Which, coincidentally enough, can be cured by magma.

Haha, yeah, it's a creepy character from Deus Ex, an awesome FPS/RPG.  I just felt the need for a change.

Change is overrated.
Btw, I have a mussel related question - I noticed that processed mussels don't seem to leave bones or shells. Do raw mussels? I'm too lazy to check.

Looks like answer is no.  Mussels (and oysters) have a [NOBONES] tag and lack [HASSHELL].  Supposedly you can get a pearl from then, but I think that's been broken for a while.  There's a good chance it'll be fixed in the next version.
