Champions and Target practice
« on: September 18, 2009, 05:16:52 pm »

Do Champion marks(whatevers) still train at the archery range? I'm encountering a problem where my squad leaders seen to have reach a high level and spend their time in the dining room while their misfortune squaddies stand around idle, still wallowing in their "crossbowman" status. Do I just keep catching these guys at a bad time, or do I need to reorganise my military?

I think you need to reorganize your military, since squads really screw stuff up.

To do it successfully, put all your soldiers on duty, return them to their original squads, and then stand them down again. Doing it from standing down is a little buggy.

Hopefully then, your soldiers should start practicing their crossbow skills.

There are other things to try. We should post a Marksdwarf FAQ or something for all the trouble people have with them.

I don't follow. Do you mean that they should be returned to individual squads? Or that they have to be put back into their very first grouped squads?

Individual squads.

The chain of command thing screws everything up, and makes marksdwarves act in an undesirable manner anyway.

Before resorting to such drastic measures, I tried organising the idle grunts into sub-squads. It worked! They're back training at the archery ranges.

Here's the weirdest part. The champion has joined them!! He's just standing there. presumably barking orders or whatnot. This game is mental.

Champion marksdwarves will most definitely practice at an archery range. Do make sure, though, that they have appropriate weapons (e.g. make sure one of them didn't grab an artifact melee weapon), practice bolts (wood or bone, not metal), and that they don't have anything strange in their hands (if you had them wrestling, for example).

P.S. If you don't get this note, let me know and I'll write you another.
It's amazing how dwarves can make a stack of bones completely waterproof and magmaproof.
It's amazing how they can make an entire floodgate out of the bones of 2 cats.

I dislike my champion marksdwarves practicing, because they fire like they've got submachine guns. Good in combat, burns through your ammo stockpile in minutes. (Honestly. I accidentally took my champion marksdwarf squad off duty, and my ammo stockpile went from about 3k to 1.5k in about 10 minutes or so.)

Christ, are you dwarves or are you elves? If you think Hell has too many demons, then you kill them till the population reaches an acceptable number.
