Equipping my Legendaries
« on: September 17, 2009, 01:06:38 pm »

Here's a question I've always had, but never bothered to find out. When I assign dwarfs what weapons they can use, is there any way I can designate a particular dwarf to a certain weapon? Why I ask is that my marksdwarves tend to pick up whatever crossbow the feel like, sometimes leaving one or both of my legendary crossbows behind in favor of regular wooden ones.

It's not a big deal for me, but it would be cool if I could assign my champion marksdwarf a legendary weapon and my best armor instead of whatever crap was closest to him at the time.

Forbid the item you don't want them to use?

If they pick the wrong item, forbid it from their inventory so they'll drop it and pick another. Keep doing that till they pick the one you want. Or just flat out forbid all crossbows and reclaim just the legendary. Then reclaim everything else.

Forbidding equipped items does nothing - you need to designate it for dumping (and make sure all of your garbage dump zones will allow the item to be reclaimed), at which point another dwarf will run up and take the item, causing your soldier to get a "Pickup Equipment" task and grab replacement gear which, if you've forbidden everything else, will be the item you want him to use.

P.S. If you don't get this note, let me know and I'll write you another.
It's amazing how dwarves can make a stack of bones completely waterproof and magmaproof.
It's amazing how they can make an entire floodgate out of the bones of 2 cats.

Kind of round-about, but that'll work. I kind of wish the interface supported an easier way to do this, but DF is a jewel of a game no less.

Thanks for the help!

As an addition to this, you can forbid the item in the soldier's hands, set him to unarmed (or unarmored or shieldless; it works for both), and then reset his preferences once he's dropped the item. He'll go find another crossbow or sword or shield or what have you.

It might be a little faster than having your dwarves dump stuff, especially if your hauler dwarves are busy.

If I want soldiers to have the right gear(Guards can have the bad stuff), I lock them in a room which has a part of the ceiling channelled out. I set the good gear to be dumped through the ceiling, and they will pick up the only thing they can reach, the good stuff. If a guard gets something good, that's good for him.

What kind of statues are your masons making, that you think they have "maximum exposure"?
(Full frontal ones, apparently.  With very short beards.)
