Laptop Specs
« on: September 16, 2009, 10:04:42 pm »

I was just checking to make sure my laptop can run DF without burning out the processor. I've heard warnings to that effect.

Pentium Dual Core @ 2.00 Ghz
3 gigs RAM

if it runs in my netbook, it should run in your laptop.

... then again, DF does not use multithreading, which means, or so I have been told, that it only uses ONE of your cores. So you might find it running slower than it should...

DF will never 'burn out' a processor unless you're doing something horribly wrong. But just remember that DF isn't multithreaded, so raw Ghz in a single core is what you're looking for. 2.0 will run it, sure, but perhaps not rate amongst the greatest DF-running machines of all time. Remember to pick up one of the newer GL releases so you can get maximum framerate for your power.

My laptop is running it about 40 FPS with 200 dwarfs, and I also have a 2 Ghz dual core processor, you'll be fine :D

A single core might actually be better for DF, since it only uses 1.

Dual-cores tend to have a lower GHz for the same price of a single core.

Youre forgetting about OS Overhead. The extra cores will more easily handle that. I wouldn't know how to calculate the difference, but it should be significant as, with a little fiddling about in the task manager, you can dedicate one core to running DF alone and the other to just the OS.

Of course, if you're worried about OS overhead cutting into your power for DF, you can't beat Linux's tiny footprint.

Or go into task manager and set dwarf fortres to high priority (Rightclick > go to proccess > right click > priority > high).  ;D
