Really minor suggestion

This is practically nitpicking, but...
When saving the game, perhaps have the text change to say "Saving..." before it begins to save?
On slower computers the delay between hitting a key and the save finishing can be awkward to say the least...
And some may be confused at that time, wondering if their keypress registered at all.

I don't have a huge delay on it, but I have thought the same thing a few times, especially when I'm debugging and everything runs about 5x slower...  then I get distracted and do something else.  I'll make sure I have it written down anyway.

My thought was that it'd be easier to just make it display a little text right before it starts saving the files, than a progress indicator...
But a progress indicator would be fantastic, of course.
