Incoming King vs. Population Cap
« on: September 16, 2009, 06:12:38 pm »

I've scoured the search database in search of an answer to my question. It seems the question has been asked several times but never answered. My search of the wiki also turned up nothing.

Here it is:

Will an incoming king whose demands have been met arrive at your fortress if you are already past the population cap? And yes, a caravan has come and gone since the demands were met. In fact, it's been about two years.

My cap is set at 160, I'm currently rocking 171... no King! Now I know in terms of semantics 'population cap' isn't a correct term for it, it is more of an immigration inhibitor, but does it inhibit the King's arrival as well?

The king arrives with the next immigrants. So no, he won't show up until you lose 11 dwarves or raise the cap.

Can anyone confirm that? As far as I can remeber, other nobles DO arrive (to replace magma-roasted predecessors), even if you're above the population cap

Being the noble that he is, yes, the king will show up whether you've passed the cap or not.
And if you're roping him in the normal way, be prepared for about 4-5 dwarves, the king, his consort, and his entourage.

The king arrives with the next immigrants.

You're mis-interpreting this.

The king does come when the next migration wave should come - but if they don't come, that doesn't stop him.  More "Any migrants that season show up with the king", he just uses their travel itinerary.

Ah. I stand corrected then.

Thank you for the responses, but I am nonetheless left wondering why, after so long, I still don't have a King. I've never had to wait two years before. Any idea how long it normally takes? If it is supposed to be the next immigrant-wave-opportunity after the caravan which met the demands, then it is kind of odd that I'm still emptyhanded.

Maybe there's no living King / Queen in the civ? I had one King die of old age on site and I don't think he was replaced. (A simple corner case oversight, I thought.) Some dwarven civs might not have a functioning King / Queen, AFAIK.

I checked the civ screen and there is a living, Dwarven King. Legends also did not show him dieing.

It may take several years for the king to arrive, so just be patient. My last fortress had a population of 268 when the king arrived and it had been capped at 200 (eventually had to cap children at 0, as I was witnessing a dwarfsplosion), but it took a while after I satisfied the requirements before he showed up (with queen consort, advisor, and 4 axe lord royal guards).

P.S. If you don't get this note, let me know and I'll write you another.
It's amazing how dwarves can make a stack of bones completely waterproof and magmaproof.
It's amazing how they can make an entire floodgate out of the bones of 2 cats.
