Fluid logic gates
« on: September 11, 2009, 03:58:49 pm »

I experimented with logic gates and haven't found this on the wiki so I thought to share...

You need a stream and a drain but no power source or pump.

Key:
W:Wall
X:Floodgate
B:Raising bridge
+:NO pressure plate (set to trigger at 4-7)
-:NC pressure plate (set to trigger at 0-3)
D: Drain

Code: [Select]
               AND      NAND     OR       NOR       XOR       XNOR

               ~~~      ~~~      ~~~      ~~~      ~~~~~      ~~~~~
               W~W      W~W      W~W      W~W      W~W~W      W~W~W
Input 1    ->  WXW  ->  WXW  ->  WBW  ->  WBW  ->  WBWXW  ->  WBWXW
Input 2    ->  WXW  ->  WXW  ->  WBW  ->  WBW  ->  WXWBW  ->  WXWBW
Output         W+W      W-W      W-W      W+W      WW+WW      WW-WW
               WDW      WDW      WDW      WDW       WDW        WDW
I haven't tried it but I suppose you could replace the floodgates by doors and the bridges by hatches covering a drain for a faster reaction.
Have fun.
My work:
I've also made an 8-bit one around the time of this thread, albeit it was water powered and built like this:
Reservoir of water
Logic gates
Drain
It basically went like this:
Spoiler (click to show/hide)
Also, your OR and NOR should be switched.
You're right, fixed.
What's linked to what there? are the inputs fluid, or levers to the various bridges and floodgates?
Ihe inputs would be levers or pressure plates linked to the bridges and floodgates - the sole purpose of the water is to translate the input signals into output signals.
P.S. If you don't get this note, let me know and I'll write you another.
It's amazing how dwarves can make a stack of bones completely waterproof and magmaproof.
It's amazing how they can make an entire floodgate out of the bones of 2 cats.
Diagonals don't translate water pressure. Your XOR and XNOR are faulty in this regard. The situation could be repaired by removing the V shape and making it a strait line, like so:
Code: [Select]
~WWWWW~  ~WWWWW~
~BX+BX~  ~BX-BX~
WWWDWWW  WWWDWWW
