Happy thoughts for pet triumphs
« on: September 10, 2009, 10:24:15 am »

As it stands, pets are... kind of limited. They can't be trained(even if a normally-trainable sort - it might be nice if a dwarf with a suitable pet, and nobody else, could train that pet); they can only be assigned after training, or just be as-is. There's nasty thoughts if a pet gets killed...

What if the pet makes a kill? There's currently no way to view it, and no benefit to the dwarf. Couldn't the dwarf get a happy thought for being "proud of a pet's loyalty in battle", or similar?

it'd finally bring a use to the thirty some chained war dogs i have sitting in my entrance acting as cannon fodder protection. i'm game and it shouldn't be too hard.

Well, it might not do much for chained/unassigned animals. Those are, in a way, like traps.

But the ones assigned to your outdoor workers, following them around, or as backup to your soldiers...

This would mean the happy thought for those kills doesn't go to waste.

Urist is generally happy:  Little Fluffy Wumples ate a goblin today

Thoughts don't seem to be that specific, but yes, that's the general idea. [His/Her] pet distinguished itself in battle, or such.

An indirect equivalent to taking joy in slaughter, which, granted, not all dwarves (seem to?) do anyway.
