Problem with Possessed Dwarf
« on: September 15, 2009, 11:41:23 am »

Rovok Edanobok, armorer, has recently been possessed by a strange force, and promptly ran over to the forge, holing herself up in there. Excited by the possibility of fantastic new mail for my champions, I have tried to cater to her every whim.

Her creation, Tharith Arbost, needs:
bones, bones, bones, leather, rock blocks, cut gems, leather, a shell, metal bars.

I have all of these things readily available in nearby stockpiles, but she just sits in the workshop muttering about her requirements. I tried smelting several more bars, building some more blocks and moving around the bone/shell stockpiles, but she won't budge. None of the materials are forbidden, etc etc.

Not wanting to miss this opportunity, I humbly present myself to your collection of knowledge. Any ideas what's wrong?

A little bit more information: I'm playing 40d release under The Mike Mayday graphics edition (DFG) v19. The only difference is the addition of two animals and icons for them: the pig and the tapir.

Something is missing, or she can't find a path to it, or it's forbidden (reserved for just such an occasion, perhaps?)

I'm tempted to say "check her preferences in her profile", but there's evidence that those distinctions are no longer are as critical to artifact construction as they once were thought to be.  Couldn't hurt, at this point.

Stumped.

I know sim questions have been asked before - do a search?

Do the usual pathfinding thing of drafting a dwarf, tell him to stand on the forge then tell him to go to each of the materials stockpiles.

And bear in mind that items are usually grabbed in order, so look into the forge and see what materials are there, then find what's next on the list and make more of it.

From what I've seen, preferences are usually only ever enforced on metal bars. I've never seen a dwarf only want a certain type of leather, gem, or stone, but I've seen plenty of them pouting about a certain type of metal (usually when I don't want them to use it. No I do not want you to use three bars of platinum to forge a breastplate, please go take the steel I have not forbidden).

From the wiki:

Quote
In somewhat rarer cases, a dwarf with a personality preference for a specific material, such as steel or silver bars, will demand exactly that specific sub-type of material. For this reason, it is a good idea to keep as many types of material on hand as possible, including the three different kinds of glass. Forbidding materials won't let you get around this either: if they want a specific material subtype and you forbid it in favor of something else, they'll just sulk in their workshop until you unforbid the material or they are able to find it some other way - or they go insane. Asking a liaison for likely materials in advance is a good plan - "next year" is far too long for a moody dwarf to last. Check your dwarves' preferences if you care.

Once you have struck Adamantine, all moods which use cloth or metal as a primary component will insist on using Adamantine cloth or wafers over all other materials; moody dwarves which happen to want metal for decorations will still choose bars based on distance or preference. Moods involving stone crafting or masonry will not prefer raw Adamantine over other stones.

I would check the armorer's personality and see what metal she likes.

Also, you can manufacture vomit at a smelter.  Subsequently removing the smelter spews vomit over a surprising area.

Indeed, it seems the dwarf wanted copper specifically. I was under the impression this would be made more explicit, but nay, it was just her preferred metal. Rovok Edanobok is now happily pounding away at the anvil, and it seems Tharith Arbost will see its creation after all! Many thanks for all suggestions!
