Nothing in the western swamps?
« on: September 07, 2009, 08:38:44 pm »

Just got this weird announcement in brown saying "There is nothing to catch in the western swamps."  Any idea what this means?  Happened just before winter.
First time I ever recall seeing it.

Means that your fisher dwarves have exhausted the supply of water borne food in the western region of your map. I regularly get it. They then switch to a different patch. It eventually replenishes mind.

It seems very dwarven to use the hell itself as a garbage disposal. I can just see this isolated pile of goblin clothing, rotten food, and chunks of animals sitting there in a featureless plain, slowly cooking in the heat as demons pick at it.

Must of been a fisher dwarf in the migration wave.  Usually I switch their labors off and have them haul.

Huh. Not sure then. Are you on a cold map? Maybe if it freezes you get the same message? But then there's the problem of a freezing swamp... Can't think of anything else though... Evaporation perhaps?

Perhaps there just wasn't anything in there to begin with?

Also, fish are supposedly meant to replenish, but I've been getting 'there is nothing to catch in the river/cave river' notes for years, and no more raw fish.

A tendon in the skull has been torn!
The Raven has been knocked unconcious!

Elves do it in trees. Humans do it in wooden structures. Dwarves? Dwarves do it underground. With magma.

you could be over-fishing then, so that they don't have a chance to replenish....maybe.

Fish only replenish a limited amount - once you catch enough, they're gone forever and you can retire your fisherdwarves and train them in another profession (or put them in the military/guard).

P.S. If you don't get this note, let me know and I'll write you another.
It's amazing how dwarves can make a stack of bones completely waterproof and magmaproof.
It's amazing how they can make an entire floodgate out of the bones of 2 cats.

What are you catching?  If you're catching turtles then you can't catch them in the winter.  Otherwise check the wiki for the game data.  Like how the turtle has a [NO_WINTER] tag.
