Also, Losing is Fun. It's true that losing your fortress is always a great moment, and surviving deadly food crisis and heartache inducing ambushes is what make the game more than a city builder.

The more mature/wealthy your fort, the more likely it is you know DF's ropes pretty well, and thus the more likely you are ready for some extra challenge.

Not necessarily.  A new player could easily run into a pocket of platinum and have a high-level stonecrafter who turns the nuggets into =platinum ore statues= and inflate the fort's wealth higher than the player's actual "progress."

Not necessarily.  A new player could easily run into a pocket of platinum and have a high-level stonecrafter who turns the nuggets into =platinum ore statues= and inflate the fort's wealth higher than the player's actual "progress."

Pure wealth measures could easily be balanced by population to avoid that problem.  But I'm skeptical that even a ludicrously wealth-producing new player's fort of 7-20 dwarves could really rival the average new player's 80-dwarf fort for wealth.  Rather than seeing it as an abstract "progress" meter, any measure of "progress" should be realistic--attracting antagonists only because features present in the fort are actually things the antagonist wants or otherwise seeks out.

And if there's no wizard available, you'd get an attacking demigod with an army of giant eagles, or an antman breeding season, or a demon king causing an earthquake, or an ohmu stampede. Maybe the wizard will help you against the ohmus, if you've played your cards right.

That almost seems fair though... Discover valuable underground resource you can't defend => Get taken over by world power.
