Dwarves ignoring hungry/thirsty prisoner.

    A valuable dwarf got jailed for a failed mandate, so now he's sitting at the end of a chain in the prison. He's hungry and dehydrated, but the other dwarves aren't bringing him food or water. I've definitely had some idlers sitting with "No Job," yet have Health Care enabled. Why are they ignoring him?

Instead of waiting for someone to feed/water a chained dwarf just set a food and drink stockpile next to him and he'll be able to drink and eat of his own accord.

I am necroing this thread because I have this exact same problem...and I have a setup like this:


x = chain (prisoner is attached to this)
B = bed
F = food stockpile
D = Drink only stockpile

                 B
             FXD
               DF

There are barrels stored on these stockpiles, and they are set to take from my main kitchen stockpile so I must assume there is food and drink in them.. yet my prisoner just sits there dying of thirst and starving, though they will use the bed to sleep now that I made it a barracks (they can't afford the rent otherwise)  Every time a dwarf starts the "give water" task, they interrupt it for Drink or Sleep etc, and then decide to do something else.

No injuries, only thing that shows up on the wound window is "dehydrated" and "hungry", the various body parts are all white.

Double check that the barrels have something in them. Dwarves like to put an extra barrel onto stockpiles for somer eason.

k over it. It'll say the barrel type, and if there's something in it, it'll say that too. E.g. Oak rendered fat barrel or whatever.

This is probably the problem - a 1-tile booze stockpile will never have any booze in it unless you create it when there isn't enough stockpile space to hold your existing booze, and once it goes empty it will never be refilled (since the empty barrel is assigned to the stockpile, preventing a full barrel from being placed there). With food stockpiles, empty barrels should get filled with the appropriate type of food, though generally only if the food isn't already in a barrel.

Ahh ok...those are just empty barrels then.  Back to putting some one on Healthcare only and/or hoping the prisoners don't die of starvation before their sentance is over....kind of too bad I can't make sure there will be booze in those piles, as it helps keep the prisoners happy : /

A stockpile will have empty bins/barrels in it, the default is equal to the size of the stockpile.  Use <q> to change those.  For a size 1 food stockpile, have 0 barrels reserved and a new, full(ish) barrel should take its place asap.

If it's an empty barrel, mark it for dumping <d,b,d, left click> and hope it gets replaced with something full.

Having a stockpile dedicated specifically for empty barrels (<q, s> a  furniture stockpile) can help move those out of food stockpiles (unless they're being reserved for that stockpile).   Near your still and/or farmer's workshop is a good place.

Which is some info, but not all.

Use <k>, use +/- to highlight the desired barrel/bin (in case there's more than one item),  and then hit <Enter> to actually see what's in it. That will show exact contents.  Use +/- and <Enter> again to view an individual item, for instance if you want the exact contents of a prepared meal, or the value of something, or want to un/forbid/dump one particular item in a barrel.

Sounds like your prisoner is too far from your meeting area, where dwarfs idle until they remember to do low priority jobs like this one.

\Back to putting some one on Healthcare only

I have Health Care on every dwarf all the time - even my distant miners, who have no other labor at all.  If they're the ones who remember to save a dwarf from dying, it's all good.

I don't know if "Health Care only" is necessary (unless time is running out) - perhaps that and Refuse hauling, or food, or some other useful but sporadic job.  HC is a low priority, unfortunately, but I think that's a "weighting" thing more than an absolute - that is, they're far less likely to do it, but won't put other things ahead of it every time.  (That's the way it feels to me, anyway.)  :-\
