Smiths won't smith!

So, I have a legendary weaponsmith and a legendary armorsmith. I have queued up a Steel mace at one magma forge and two Steel shields at another. Both of them have their respective labors turned on and nothing else, the workshop preferences allow them to work there, they have access to the forges and to steel bars.
What they do not have, is the initiative to do any work. They just sit there with "No Job."
What gives? My pop just broke 175, incidentally, if that actually affects anything. Do they need to meet with the clerk or something? Or are they just stupid?

Are the materials used to construct the forges forbidden by any chance?

Can they walk to it? Can they walk to the metal? Is the metal forbidden? Is the workshop forbidden? Is anything suspended? Does your clerk have a proper office? Are they injured? Are you SURE the prefs allow those smiths?

Did you double check all of the above?

-Try recruiting and unrecruiting them.
-Assign it as an Order through the orders screen.

You know what? I just figured it out.
A Guard just got taken by a mood, and I wanted him to go for only the most valuable stone I had (platinum / aluminum ore), so I forbade ALL chalk, obsidian, and such.

Guess what most of my workshops are made of.

Dangit.

Thankfully, the guy is already making his artifact so I can unforbid it all again. (1x Platinum nuggets, 2x Native Aluminum, 1x Aluminum bars, 1 cut and 1 rough bandfire opal, sasquatch leather, giant cave spider chitin, I even made sure he used cave lobster shell. Sadly, there weren't any valuable bones so he settled with rainbow trout.)

I feel for you; I hate it when that happens. I've found the best solution to that is to make all my workshops out of blocks.  That way I won't accidentally forbid it.

So there's that, as well. It looks like the only chronic problems that water can't cure are nausea and cave spider bites.
Which, coincidentally enough, can be cured by magma.
