Top 3 FPS killers:
3: Exessive ammounts of pathing calculations. a 3x3 maze is slower then a flat expanse of 12x12.
2: Large ammounts of objects/terrain/dwarves. As one would expect.
1: Fluids. A single 6 buzzing arround a pool of 7's brings me down from 350(my max) to about 200.

The biggest kill of frame rate 'feel' (I don't actually have fps on, I will do when I next play) for me seems to be when there are lots of squares with items on (mainly rock) on screen at the time. This doesn't make sense at all to me because if I scroll just slightly sideways I notice a large increase in movement speed for everything, or if I pile all the rocks onto one square I get the same result. either way I think that is something wrong.

It might be from the engine eating processing power in order to tell the videocard to render every object seperatly.

When I start on a map tha thas a ton of Z-levels, it slows down immensely.  Even when there's no critters.  I tried a 3x5 on a map with 20+ cliffs, I think they actually spanned about 60 z-levels aboveground, and it was mostly unplayable from the very beginning.  This was before I dug anything out--my wagon started on the top of the hill, so very few places were even accessable.  There was a river, though...hm.

Rivers drain fps faster then they drain water.
