Floodgates are limited to blocking one tile per mechanism though.

and don't function as a crushing device ala Atom Smasher...

(and the wall would likely look nicer)

If you could build a multi tile-wide retracting wall linked to a pressure plate...

Can't that function also be filled by a bridge?

I'd be fine with a form of togglable pathing blocker (floodgate, door, etc.) that has the property of being able to blend into a wall or floor. Because let's face it, everyone wants secret passages for their lever-driven adventurer labyrinths.

Mechanized walls and floors and so on have been suggested in the past.

The reason I want it is cause I am making an underwater fortress and thought it would be cool to have a retracting tunnel for access to main land.

If it could retreat into the floor it could function as a 1 z-level elevator.

Would love retracting walls, it could make a very nice front door if your front entrance is 3+ tiles wide.

Sure Floodgates would work, but it is just not the same.  ;D

I imagine the spaceship would need these for "doors" that go swoosh.

A dwarf walks up to wall-door, stepping on one of the two pressure plates to open it. It grinds open, failing utterly to feel sci-fi. The dwarf steps through the door off the pressure pad, and the doors close 10x speed, crushing him in an explosion of blood and guts all over the dinning hall. Bones protrude from the seam in the wall till another dwarf steps on the pressure pad...

I am guessing the retracting wall would start out acting like a secret door (if made out of same material) of variable width that dwarves who knew about it could path through (if colored-different-out-of-others/obvious anyone can path) like any other door. It could then be attached to lever or pressure plates. But, as stated, it would be better for adventure mode to just leave it as a secret door.

Imagine a cool peice of sky-blue and milk-white marble about 3cm by 2cm and by 0.5cm, containing a tiny 2mm malacolite crystal. Now imagine the miles of metamorphic rock it's embedded in that no pick or chisel will ever touch. Then, imagine that those miles will melt back into their mantle long before any telescope even refracts an image of their planet. The watchers will be so excited to have that image too.
