I think I'd recommend adamantine clothing with leg. miners in dangerous areas.

There really needs to be more extractable strand minerals for making tough clothes and training strand extractors. Asbestos wouldn't be too hard to implement, although I believe that with current rules this would require it to be incorrectly classified as a metal.

It's either [WAFERS] or [ANY_USE] that enable strands and clothing. Add the tags to the metal you want in the raws. (it might require a regen of the world though)

Of course because of [WAFERS] you'll need 3 times the metal you'd normally need; better to make a smelter reaction that creates the strand of the metal. [edit - and of course, adding these reactions will require a regen of the world to take effect]
