Need help finding a new processor - Thanks guys!
« on: August 21, 2009, 05:38:16 pm »

I need a new processor pretty badly. Presently I have an AMD Athlon 64 x2 Dual Core 4000+ @ 2.1ghz (whatever that means :))

Code: [Select]
System specs:
Operating System: Windows Vista™ Home Premium (6.0, Build 6002) Service Pack 2 (6002.lh_sp2rtm.090410-1830)
System Manufacturer: Dell Inc.
       System Model: Inspiron 531
               BIOS: oC)Phoenix - AwardBIOSTeDell System v6.00PG
          Processor: AMD Athlon(tm) 64 X2 Dual Core Processor 4000+ (2 CPUs), ~2.1GHz
             Memory: 3070MB RAM
Page File: 1048MB used, 5305MB available
    DirectX Version: DirectX 10
DX Setup Parameters: Not found
     DxDiag Version: 6.00.6001.18000 32bit Unicode

Card name: ATI Radeon HD 2600 XT
     Manufacturer: ATI Technologies Inc.
Chip type: ATI Radeon Graphics Processor (0x9588)
         DAC type: Internal DAC(400MHz)

This is what I was thinking of, because it has more than 2.4ghz (an important number) and because it's cheap. Anyway, would that be compatible with what I have? And how much better off would I be getting a pricey one?

If you do not know what you're doing really well, I suggest not doing it. You must make absolutely sure that your motherboard has the proper chip set to accept the processor. Since the chip you're looking at is the same model (Athlon) you probably won't have a problem. But check, double check, or else you may need to get a new motherboard too.

I don't think there's a way to diagnose the motherboard without opening up the computer, and I'm a bit too lazy to do that ATM.

I will check to see if the new CPU has the same plugs as the old one, if it does there shouldn't be any problem.

You can just look up the socket on both processors online.

That's basically what I meant.

Anyway, it seems that the information given in DXdiag only tells me enough to know what kind of processor it is to within a few models- the key difference, apparently, being socket types.

I'll probably have to figure this out on my own. Maybe see if there's a comparable Intel processor.

http://www.newegg.com/product/product.aspx?item=N82E16819103774

This is what you have. 4000+ is actually a product name/number. It uses a socket AM2.

Your choice would not work, because it's a socket AM3.

This is what you'd want to get.

It costs $10 more, but it's one of the most popular AMD CPUs on newegg. Also, 3.0GHz.

also, INTEL!

Actually, AMD is the better choice to make when you're in the lower end. They're cheap and powerful, their motherboards are too.
