For relationships, I figure the dwarfs "interact" by proximity.  I know that a sparsely populated fortress generates less friendships, marriages, and babies than a dense fortress, all without any meeting areas of any kind.

I don't know if dwarfs interact when passing each other during a job.  But, between jobs they'll mill around, and there's a higher chance of two dwarfs being near each other in dense fortresses.  Meeting areas accelerate this.  This would also be why soldier dwarfs make friends, but usually only with other soldier dwarfs at first.  They spend a lot of time in the barracks together.

I also thought that dwarfs with a room may sleep somewhere else if that room's beds are all occupied.  One thing that I haven't figured out is if dwarfs will use the unassigned beds in a room, even if they are owners/co-owners.  At least, with some creative constructing, it's possible to create a single room with two non-overlapping room designations from separate beds, then give both beds to the married dwarfs.

If you do the one-tile meeting area, make in in a closed room at the bottom of a really tall shaft. Drop animals down there and your dwarves should start to get used to death and possibly prevent tantrum spirals. Also do it as an experiment to see if dwarves with the "doesn't care about anything anymore" trait will form relationships.
Regarding this, is there any way to reliably get animals to stand on top of a floor hatch or bridge? My livestock always follows their owners or assembles in the meeting halls unless I chain them up. And sadly, animals with owners can't be chained. :(

You can trap owned animals using some tricks, but it's easier to just take strays and pit them.

Yeah, if you put multiple beds in a single bedroom members of the owner's family will use them.  I agree with you on why dwarves sometimes don't use their bedrooms.

I suppose it was possible that one of the kids was sleeping in his/her mother's bed in the case of the noble sleeping in the barracks.  Nobles have their own bedrooms, of course.  I don't recall whether it was him or her, but it could very well have been her and that would explain that.

I am trying to play matchmaker with my unattached Dwarves.
Still playing with genetics, I see.

I must've done something wrong, but I now don't bother building additional beds - they were never used in my first successful fortress, as nobles would never even go near their own room if a child was sleeping in their assigned bed.

Actually, now that you mention it I only saw other children sleep in the extra beds, so it may not apply to dwarf who owns the main bed.

I think dwarves do interact even when working, I managed to never get idlers (as soon as I saw one i told him to go dumping those frigging thousands of rocks) for the first two years or so, but my miner (that way I discovered it was a she) married with my mason.

Now that I think of it, there could be a reason of the mason always going to get rocks from the bottom of the mining shaft rather than using the quantum stockpile 2 steps away his workshop; it was all a plan to meet his beloved more often.
If that fort had not been destroyed by my first water engeenering project, I would be dividing the map with a very tall wall only to separate those two.

Yeah my miners got married VERY SHORTLY after embark, probably 'cos they were CONSTANTLY working together at the same spots.
Also that would explain why my masons, being the idiots that they are, going down a few floors to grab rocks instead of grabbing rocks 1 step away from where they are working at...

Yes, as much as DF allows, which is nil.   :D

I gave up on my 80-adult fortress breeding project.  I was up to 15 couples, the most fecund of which already had 16 kids in the first 20 years.

I'm now working with a 14-adult fortress.  I have 5 couples and four spare males.  I have converted two of them to females with DF Companion.  It works with animals, but I don't know if the "pairing" programming for the Dwarves will work correctly now.

I once tried to make a fort starting with only 2 dwarfs to see how many descendants they could make, i'd like to try it again but i cant seem to work out how to prevent immigrants coming. I think last time i set the pop cap to 2 with the understanding that it would prevent further immigrants but not births but i was still getting immigrants every season.

I suspect that dwarves interact when they're on the same or adjacent tiles. That explains how dwarves with no free time end up with lots of passing acquaintances, they bump into other dwarves and gain minor relationships with them, and how 1 tile meeting areas build very fast relationships. Any "On Break" or "No Job" dwarf will be standing close enough to talk with a lot of dwarves at once.

I hope some day that Toady will iron things out so friends/lovers tend to take breaks at the same time and dwarves with certain personality traits will actively seek to not only sit in meeting zones but to stand near and "interact" with other dwarves. Would make relationships much more interesting.

There is an entry in the init file, I'm pretty sure. Else either use pop cap, or magma.

I would second the military dwarves idea. Put them in the same squad and give them guard duty somewhere for X amount of time and i think you will see great results.

In my oldest fortress one political powerhouse is a family where the mother is in a marksdwarf squad that spends nearly all its time on duty in a single chokepoints.  The children spend a big chunk of their time there and grow up to become mayors due to their high social skills and being friends with 10+ marksdwarves.  The last one was a master in all of the social skills when he reached adulthood.  This was higher than any of the soldiers except the squad leader (a dwarf that came in the first immigrant wave 15 years before the kid was born).

Don't know what any of it means, but it seems significant that children hanging around a place where on-duty soldiers are closely packed level up their conversation skills faster than the soldiers themselves.

Have you ever been around a group of kids when weapons are involved?

"What's that do?"
"Why?"
"How do you use that thing?"
"Why?"
"Have you ever seen a goblin?"
"Why?"
"Urist put a booger on me!"
"Why?"
"I'm hungry!"
"Why?"
"Can I play with that?"
"Why?"

Seriously, an adult spits out as few words as possible, degenerating into a few grunts, and the kids just blather on...
