Armorstand actually being used
« on: August 18, 2009, 08:26:26 am »

I thought armorstands were not used (yet) to store armor.
I thought wrong.
My dungeonmaster uses his armor stand to store his piece of orc armor:

Spoiler (click to show/hide)
I had to use (t) to see the armor inside it, (k) didn't show it, so it's definitly stored inside.

Yep, they get used just like cabinets do. I love it, keeps the clutter down.

Chests, cabinets, armour stands and weapon racks will all be used, although in my experience, only nobles ever buy armour for their rooms; I'm not sure if a military dwarf will go to the nobles room and take the armour back if they need it.

The reason I feel like they never get used is that the only dwarves with a plethora of possessions tend to throw them all over the barracks.

Your dungeon master may own plate mail, but I'm willing to bet he's still walking the halls of your fort wearing nothing but a cloak.

Seriously though, I never knew that armor stands actually could be used that way.

From what I've observed, weapons and armor only get purchased if your dwarves aren't capable of actually using them - generally, this includes large/small/narrow armor and mauls, halberds, pikes, and other non-Dwarf weapons. This can be utterly annoying when nobles or legendary dorfs decide to claim all of your goblinite before you can melt down the armor or decorate the dozens of giant cave spider silk socks to increase your wealth.

It's amazing how dwarves can make a stack of bones completely waterproof and magmaproof.

After checking my stocks, it seems that not only nobles collect armor for their rooms. I have a miner and a clothier (both legendary) that collect high boots and gauntlets respectively. It looks like it is based on their preferences.

Again, really common for that to happen, there is still a lot of stuff to be found though.

From the Dev notes, Armor and Weapon racks will be used by specific squads for their uniform requirements, as well still being able to set it as a sparing area.

SO want the next release.

To clarify somewhat, anything produced at one of your forges cannot be purchased and will only be worn by the military (and won't actually be owned by them, which is why you can dump excess junk from their inventories). Anything unwearable is treated as a collector's item (when you build stores, some end up carrying "exotic clothing" and inevitably carry narrow cave spider silk socks), so dwarves with interest in them (and a sufficient budget, unless they're legendary) tend to acquire lots of them.

Weapon and armor racks only go unused in barracks ... where they would actually get the most use.
