quick question, if I make raw glass, will that satisfy a strange mood's need for gems?

No. A dwarf will specifically request (or sketch) glass if it is required for an artifact.

I thought that raw glass was considered a raw gem, and cut glass a cut gem. You can encrust with them can you not? And aren't they handled in the jewelcrafter's workshop?

So then raw glass would satisfy a need for raw gems... yes?

Don't think so. They're identical in terms of everything but production and moods, IIRC.

I remember the first mood of my current fortress was a clothiers.. and of course he had to go an make a completely useless pigtail headscarf worth 3000 or something, which got referenced in practically every 3rd engraving.

This cloud has a silver lining, though. I realised that exceptional and masterwork socks are actually quite valuable, and since cloth is so abundant from the elves, i am able to trade a bin full of socks to every caravan i meet, for all their goodies, while getting more than enough cloth to make up for the socks i just traded.

(Also, eleves seen to have no problem with socks being offered to them, except when i accidentally offered them in a wooden bin. Needless to say, i walled them in, then built a ballista and catapult, and used them for target practice.

So, ironically, my legendary clothier is responsible for a fair amount of the forts wealth.

I supose if a dwarf is unhappy or hurt they might have a miscarriage. Perhaps we could experiment a bit.

No. They are treated as gems as far as classification, but moody dwarves still draw a distinction between the two.
