Trap doors?
« on: November 16, 2007, 08:35:00 am »

How many times have you wanted to send an annoying goblin spiralling to his doom, but don't want to use levers for fear of accidentally sending the majority of your fortress to their doom by pulling the wrong one? Well, probably not many, but I do at least.

Maybe Toady could code in trap doors which allow you to build pressure plates on top of them? Then, you could drop the enemy who set off the pressure plate in to a cage, or something more painful.  Hell, you could even bait the trap with a *Pig Tail Left Mitten* to lure in those damned thieves.

Retracting Bridges + Pressure Plates = This

You can even place spikes at the bottom of the pit! =D

A small retracting bridge could potentially be unreliable, as it takes a few seconds to retract. You can't put cages under bridges, too.  :(

You can put cage traps underneath them, though.

Make it a small drop, and you're good to go.

I think a trapdoor trap would be cool.  It would require a little more effort on the part of the player, but it's a classic trap type.  A cage trap is more effective, but maybe we could have things like colossus able to break out of cage traps but unable to climb out of pits under trapdoors.

I like the idea of having a 'trapdoor' trap - build it like you would a floor tile.  When an enemy steps on it, they fall through.  Trying to time pressure plates followed by a retractable bridge is unreliable at best.

Trap doors and spike traps are possible. There is a pause in the mechanisms' execution, and after the goblin steps on the pressure plate, he will walk one-two tiles before the hatches the plate is linked to will open. Time that right, and you'll have some very nice traps.

Wouldn't it be easier to just have pressure plates in front of a set of doors, that lock the room? Then you can do all sorts of fun things, like pour water/magma in, shoot arrows at them, drop caged dragons in or whatever.
