dwarf bones
« on: August 12, 2009, 07:27:58 am »

well, i tried asking in an old post from gameplay, but no takers. so i come here, since i'll have to mod the raws, i do believe.

i want to use dwarf bones and skulls. mainly skulls, i've had quite a number of ambushes headed by humans and dwarves (wtf goblins are stealing from the other fortresses). these dwarves are no longer a part of my peoples, and i want to totemize their heads as a reminder to build cage traps, keep them properly refilled, and do not let your children out alone.

this public fortress announcement was brought to you by the Dwarven Mechanics Union, Local 187.

No fortress mode entity will use any bones or skulls of their entire species currently.
It's unfortunate, but perhaps one of the great many changes of next release will help your cause.

i thought you got dwarf bones? Or are they only 'bones'/ I've had alot of dwarf bones in my fort. A few of them found behind accidentally walled in areas too many 'Designate Removes' away. And i've always had the bones picked up and put in a casket - but i'm sure if i was barbaric i could just leave them to the refuge stockpile to be made into idols and bolts...

But is the problem that they aren't called Dwarf bones?

Yes it is. Currently dwarves do not craft sentient races into tools and items. Creatures without [INTELLIGENT] (or [CAN_CIV], I am not sure about it) tag should work.

Here comes the question: we should check is it [INTELLIGENT] tag or appearance in an entity which blocks it? Because if it's just the "intelligent" tag, then you could replace it with [CAN_LEARN][CAN_SPEAK][CAN_CIV] and have sentient races which could be turned into items.

Also you can always use a smelter for transformation of dwarven bones to animal bones, or dwarven chunks to animal chunks. Example:

[REACTION:LEGALIZE_CANNIBALIZE]
[NAME:it's not a dwarf it's an elk, mr. judge!]
[REAGENT:1:BONES:NO_SUBTYPE:BONE:DWARF]
[PRODUCT:1:BONES:NO_SUBTYPE:BONE:ELK]

Instead of Elk, make another animal called "dwarf".

Huh?  You can do whatever with civ bones/skulls.  Just not your own civ.  You can't butcher civs but you can use their bones.  You should probably be able to use the dwarf bones from baby snatched dwarves like the OP mentioned and is asking about.  Just try making skull totems until it makes one.  If not then it is considering that dwarf part of a dwarf civ and you can't do anything.

I thought it's because of the appropriate ethic which replaced NOT_BUTCHERABLE.

What is because of the ethic?

Civ bones can be used other than your own.  Have you never had goblin bolts?  You own bones can't be used.  No civs can be butchered regardless of ethics.  I think the intention was to let you butcher other civs with ethics but it doesn't work right now.  Ethics do determine if you can butcher non-civ intelligent creatures or not.

I had goblin bolts but it evaded my mind... So ETHICS are not working in fortress mod, ah crap. I hoped they work.

Does it mean that they still work for non-civ creatures? I mean, that you can't butcher snailmen and alike?

Ethics do work for some things.  They just don't let you butcher other civs for any reason.

Ethics do work for non-civ intelligent creatures like snailmen, antmen, etc if you set them for it.  Don't remember the tag off-hand but by default you can't butcher them.  There are other uses for them as well where they do work.

What if you set your own dwarves to be butcherable? Would it be possible. This demands a test!

dwarffortressmanager lets you set em to be butchered - be good to see what comes of it. plenty of noble meat cakes, pies, bakes, puddings, biscuits and whatnot is one. Whether killingthem in this way yields usable bones, i'm not sure.

Their remains would be unusable. You'll have to put it in a coffin.
