At my main fort, got bored enough to try and goad the elves into war - I figured I'd start by offending them in trade by offering cow, dog, groundhog, and goblin skull totems, and some pig tail dresses (to insult their masculinity, see).  Not only did they accept the goods, they were ecstatic with the trading!  Clearly I have overcome the obnoxious preaching sensibilities of the overgrown hippies with brute force and intimidation!  They are now crushed and oppressed souls with nothing to look forward to but the sweet taste of oblivion, and they're kissing our dwarven arses to deliver before the goblins do.  Think it has anything to do with the ballista arrow we gave to their diplomat?

I gave elves unicorn totems, they did nothing, in fact, unicorn totems are my main export.
You said be able to use unicorn horns as spearheads.

Well, they are still all hissy about wood and trees. Start de-foresting and offering them wood crafts, that should piss them off. And remember to seize their whole caravan after doing that 

In my current fort I'm doing the same thing: provoking the elves. So far I've been quite unsuccessful at getting a reaction, though there haven't been any caravans in a while...

Elves aren't as hippie as the wiki makes them sound. They don't mind meat or bones [read: THEY'RE F***ING CANNIBALS] but they do get pissed when your dwarves give them wood. *smirk*

Epic Elf pisseroffery (I'm 97% sure that's a word). Sieze all their goods, trade them all your wood and wood crafts, re-sieze. Then burn them in magma.

2. Sell their goods back to them (including wood)
3. Cage them with a cave-in + cage traps
4. Cage the diplomat
5. Deforest the map
6. Put elves in arena with goblins-Elf slaughter ensues, if not, elf insanity.

The only problem being that the HORN token has not been implemented and thus Unicorns don't drop them.

Yeah, that's why I always have some underground towercap farms that they don't know about, they've yet to figure out where we dwarves get all our wood from.
